A few days ago I wrote about an article that caught my interest on Eric Wert. I decided today to follow the steps he outlined in his creative process, and try a couple detailed flower paintings.
His first step is to lightly outline the composition.

I took this in to my hubby and asked his opinion on the composition. He said, 'Everyone always paints vases upright. You should turn the vase on its side, fallen over.' He has no idea who Eric Wert is, who usually paints a destructive picture, with vases turned on their side, sometimes broken. I took it as a sign and decided to turn the vase over.
It looks a little awkward, like a picture turned on the wrong side, but hopefully shading will fix that.
Eric's next step is to do a monochromatic underpainting.

He left translucent pieces of the painting to the white of the panel (the glass of the vase). I have a tough time with flowers, and it's especially tough on a tiny 4 x 6" panel (trying out Ray Mar's Claessens double oil primed panel today).
I think I'm supposed to wait for this to dry before adding color, so I decided to start on another one, a little larger.

Unfortunately I haven't gotten around to anything else today. Distracted by ingress. Hopefully will have time tomorrow to add color! Can't believe the weekend is already almost over. :(
